A tragic shootout rocked Baldwin Park, California, Saturday evening, claiming the life of one police officer and leaving another injured after a gunman opened fire. The incident unfolded around 7:15 p.m. near Filhurst Avenue and Los Angeles Street, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Officers had responded to reports of gunfire and a possible victim down. Upon arrival, they were immediately met with a barrage of bullets.
“They were ambushed by gunfire as they got to the scene,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna during an emotional early morning press briefing. “Initial reports suggested the shooter may have been using a rifle, but that is still under investigation.”
Emergency responders rushed the two wounded officers to LA General Hospital… one via helicopter, the other by ambulance. Tragically, one officer did not survive. His identity has not yet been made public.
Baldwin Park Police Chief Robert Lopez praised the fallen officer’s bravery. “He showed unwavering courage. He responded to a call of danger like he always did… to protect our community. Tonight, that call cost him his life,” Lopez said, visibly moved. He described the officer as a beloved colleague, Dodgers enthusiast, and passionate snowboarder.
The second officer remains hospitalized in stable condition and is surrounded by loved ones.
“This is a heartbreaking reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face every day,” Chief Lopez added. “Please keep our officers, their families, and our entire community in your thoughts.”
Authorities confirmed the suspect was shot by police during the confrontation and is currently in stable condition while under hospital care. No additional details on the suspect’s identity or arrest location have been released.
In a chilling development, another victim was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds at the scene. Investigators believe the suspect is likely connected to that fatality as well.
Home surveillance footage captured the chaos, with officers sprinting down Filhurst Avenue with weapons drawn. One video recorded a rapid series of gunshots… up to a dozen echoing through the neighborhood.
Baldwin Park, a suburb located east of Los Angeles, is now grappling with the aftermath of this violent encounter, mourning the loss of one of its own while honoring the bravery of those who answered the call.
