it means if ppl say or do something that upset you, they just showed you what not to say or do
Some people have such bad behavior, i.e., are cranky, mean, thoughtless, selfish, etc., that the thing you learn from them is NOT to be like them. If we learn something from every person who comes into our lives, some of those people are teaching us how NOT to be.
