A terrifying scene unfolded in the Colorado skies Sunday afternoon when two small aircraft collided mid-air, sending thick smoke and debris crashing to the ground.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the collision happened around 12:10 p.m. near Fort Morgan, roughly 80 miles northeast of Denver. The planes involved were identified as a Cessna 172 and an Extra Flugzeugbau EA300. Authorities confirmed that two people were aboard each plane at the time.
The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office reported that one of the aircraft caught fire after impact, while the other suffered major damage before coming down. The condition of the four people on board has not yet been released.
Both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are now investigating the cause of the crash, with the NTSB taking the lead.
