A major security incident unfolded Saturday on Parliament Hill as the East Block was abruptly placed on lockdown, triggering panic and a flurry of emergency activity in the heart of Canada’s capital.
An urgent alert from the Parliamentary Protective Service warned anyone inside the premises to “immediately shelter in place, lock doors, and remain hidden.” The chilling directive was accompanied by a warning for the general public to avoid the area entirely until authorities give the all-clear.
A heavy police presence, including more than a dozen vehicles from the Ottawa Police and Parliamentary Protective Service, quickly swarmed the East Block. Access was completely shut off… even for authorized personnel with passes… as law enforcement secured the scene.
Reports suggest the situation may involve a potential bomb threat, as a bomb disposal unit was believed to be on site. A section of Wellington Street, directly in front of the Parliament buildings, was also cordoned off as police expanded their perimeter.
Although Parliament has been dissolved ahead of the upcoming federal election and the area is usually quieter during this period, Saturday’s lockdown has reignited security concerns at one of Canada’s most iconic political landmarks.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact nature of the threat, but the scene remains under close surveillance with first responders urging the public to await further updates.
