A heartbreaking case in Southern California has taken a grim turn. The parents of 7-month-old Emmanuel Haro, who vanished earlier this month, are now facing murder charges, prosecutors announced Tuesday.
Jake Haro, 32, and his wife Rebecca Haro, 41, were arrested at their Cabazon home after investigators found major inconsistencies in their story. Both are charged with murder and filing a false police report, according to the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office.
The couple first claimed that Rebecca was attacked outside a Big 5 sporting goods store in Yucaipa on August 15 while changing Emmanuel’s diaper. She told authorities she was knocked unconscious and discovered her baby missing when she woke up.
Rebecca even appeared in televised interviews with a visible black eye, pleading for the safe return of her son and accusing an unknown kidnapper of taking him.
Detectives quickly became doubtful of the Haros’ version of events. Officials pointed out several “inconsistencies” in their statements, and both parents stopped cooperating with investigators soon after.
Despite their lack of cooperation, search efforts continued, but Emmanuel has not been found. Authorities now believe the child is deceased. In another development, the Haros’ 2-year-old child was removed from their home by child protective services following Emmanuel’s disappearance.
The couple made a brief court appearance Tuesday, but their arraignment was postponed until September 4. It is still unclear whether they plan to enter a plea.
