In a recent interview with Men’s Health, Busta Rhymes shared a captivating tale from the ’90s when Tupac Shakur passionately defended Leaders of the New School at a college show on the West Coast. The incident involved Tupac confronting an audio engineer, which left a lasting impression on Busta and his fellow group members.
During the show’s soundcheck, the Leaders of the New School arrived late, and unfortunately, the soundman had already begun shutting down the equipment. Noticing the situation, Tupac took matters into his own hands and confronted the sound man, expressing his discontent over the missed opportunity for the soundcheck due to their tardiness. The encounter escalated, leading to Tupac physically confronting the audio engineer.
Concerned that Tupac’s actions might jeopardize their performance and get them kicked off the show, members of Leaders of the New School quickly intervened. Despite their intervention, Tupac remained steadfast, insisting that the group deserved respect and referred to them as “legends” even though they had only released one album at the time.
“You not gonna disrespect m***** Leaders of the New School, m*****,” Busta recalled. “We ain’t asking for none of this. So, we grabbing Pac like, ‘Stop, B! You gonna f**** around and not even get us the opportunity to perform. You gonna f*** up the whole bag.’ He said, ‘Man, f**** that! They can’t be disrespecting y’all. Y’all legends.’ We one album deep. He calling us legends.”
It was evident that Tupac held a deep admiration for the group and believed they deserved proper recognition. Busta and the others had to persuade Tupac to let go of the situation to avoid any potential fallout that could affect their performance.
