Prominent American playwright and actor Jeremy O. Harris, best known for the groundbreaking and Tony-nominated production Slave Play, is reportedly in police custody in Japan after authorities accused him of bringing a small amount of MDMA into the country.
According to officials, Harris was detained at Naha Airport in Okinawa on November 16 after airport customs officers discovered approximately 0.78 grams (0.0275 ounces) of what they identified as ecstasy inside a container in the tote bag he was carrying. The information was confirmed by Tatsunori Fukuda, a spokesperson for Okinawa Regional Customs.
Harris, 36, had traveled from London’s Heathrow Airport, making a stopover at Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport before landing in Okinawa for what authorities say was a sightseeing visit. The island, known for its warm climate and popular resort destinations, sees millions of international travelers every year.
Following the discovery, customs officials immediately alerted local police in Tomishiro, who arrested Harris and later filed a criminal complaint with the Naha District Prosecutors’ Office. As of now, the case is under further investigation as prosecutors determine whether formal charges will be filed.
Authorities say no additional illegal substances were found in Harris’ luggage and believe the small quantity of MDMA may have been intended for personal use. Officials have not disclosed whether Harris made any statements regarding the allegations.
Representatives for Harris have not issued a public response, and the playwright has not commented on the situation. iHearts143Quotes News has also contacted the U.S. Embassy in Japan seeking additional information.
Under Japan’s strict criminal justice system, suspects can be held for up to 23 days before being formally charged… a practice often criticized internationally as part of the country’s controversial “hostage justice” system. Extended detention is common when suspects remain silent or dispute the allegations.
This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
