A deadly shooting near Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, left at least two people dead and eight others seriously injured on Saturday afternoon, according to city officials. Police say the suspect remains at large, prompting an immediate lockdown and a shelter-in-place order for the surrounding area.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley confirmed during an evening briefing that the gunfire was reported shortly after 4 p.m.inside the Barus & Holley engineering building, where students were in the middle of final exams.
Emergency responders transported eight victims to Rhode Island Hospital, where they are listed as critical but stable. Officials cautioned that the numbers could change as the investigation continues and more information becomes available.
Law enforcement has not made any arrests, and no weapon has been recovered, according to Providence Deputy Police Chief Tim O’Hara. The suspect is described only as a male wearing black clothing, who reportedly fled the building and exited toward Hope Street.
Police conducted a full sweep of the engineering complex but were unable to locate the shooter. Authorities have urged anyone living on or near Brown’s campus to remain indoors until further notice.
Brown University issued emergency alerts instructing students to lock doors, silence phones, and stay hidden, emphasizing safety as the top priority while police continue the manhunt.
