Two Pennsylvania State Troopers are recovering after being shot in a dramatic encounter Thursday morning in Susquehanna County. Authorities confirmed that the suspect, who was armed and uncooperative, was fatally shot during the incident.
The troopers, identified as Joseph Perechinsky and William Jenkins, sustained serious injuries but are currently in stable condition. Both officers were airlifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. According to Pennsylvania State Police, the suspect, who was wielding a rifle, failed to comply with orders before being shot and killed.
State Police Commissioner Col. Christopher Paris labeled the event an “ambush,” highlighting the danger faced by the officers. In a statement, officials reassured the public that there is no ongoing threat to the community.
Gov. Josh Shapiro expressed his concern during a public event, offering his prayers for the officers. He assured the public that State Police Commissioner Paris was on the scene and provided updates on the situation, noting that he plans to visit once the event concludes.
The shooting unfolded around 11:15 a.m. along Route 171 near the village of Thompson, located roughly 40 miles north of Scranton. Local authorities have been working to piece together the details of this tense incident.
