Birdman, the founder of Cash Money Records, sparked controversy during a recent visit to Orleans Parish Prison by questioning whether reading can truly benefit inmates.
In a newly surfaced social media clip, Birdman is seen addressing a group of inmates, stating, “I got enough power to help y’all.” The conversation took a turn when an inmate expressed a desire for greater access to books and literature. Birdman responded skeptically, asking, “You think reading books gonna help y’all?”
This provocative statement has ignited a debate, with Baton Rouge rapper Fredo Bang stepping in to provide some context. On Wednesday, June 19, Fredo Bang took to X (formerly Twitter) to defend Birdman’s remarks.
“People who never did time might be confused on what he’s saying,” Fredo wrote. He explained that the inmates Birdman was addressing are likely in pre-trial status, meaning they are still fighting charges and could potentially be released soon.
For these individuals, Fredo argued, immediate help in the form of a good lawyer or bail would be more beneficial than access to books.
He added, “The one asking for books probably doesn’t plan on going home (or knows he’s gonna have to take time) soon, and in that case, books would be a good thing to have. Just a lil clarity…”
