Fat Joe shared the story of how he almost rapped alongside two of Hip Hop’s biggest legends, Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur, in a legendary cypher during the 1993 Budweiser Superfest at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.
The rapper was in the front row when he saw the two icons entering the stage, and they invited him to join them. Fat Joe said he was nervous and didn’t have any rhymes prepared, but he was excited to rap alongside the legends. Unfortunately, Big Daddy Kane stopped the cypher due to time constraints on his set, and Fat Joe’s dream was crushed.
In an interview with Angie Martinez for Warner Music Group’s Iconic Records podcast series, Fat Joe reminisces about the moment he almost rapped with Biggie and 2Pac. He admitted that he was nervous but excited to be on stage with the two legends. Fat Joe recalled how they passed him the mic and were about to start the cypher when Big Daddy Kane interrupted and said they had no time left. Fat Joe praised Kane for saving him from doing “some bullshit,” but he also expressed his disappointment for missing the opportunity to rap with two of the greatest rappers of all time.
The interview is part of the first season of Warner Music Group’s Iconic Records podcast series, which explores Notorious B.I.G.’s second and final album, Life After Death. Fat Joe’s story adds a new layer of context to the legendary cypher and the role that Big Daddy Kane played in blocking his dream
