Beyoncé and JAY-Z are currently facing a copyright infringement lawsuit concerning Beyoncé’s hit song “Break My Soul” from her Renaissance album.
According to legal documents obtained on May 22, the group Da Showstoppaz has filed the lawsuit, alleging that their 2002 track “Release A Wiggle” was used without permission in “Break My Soul.”
Additionally, Big Freedia, whose song “Explode” was sampled in “Break My Soul,” has also been named in the lawsuit due to the allegedly unauthorized sample.
The plaintiffs, Tessa Avie, Keva Bourgeois, Henri Braggs, and Brian Clark, claim that their song’s “unique phrases, melody, and musical arrangement” were unlawfully incorporated into Beyoncé’s track. They assert that they were neither credited nor compensated for the use of their work.
Da Showstoppaz are seeking compensation in the form of unspecified damages, along with royalties and appropriate credit for their contributions.
