Veteran actor Rick Hurst, affectionately remembered for his iconic role as Deputy Cletus Hogg on the classic TV series The Dukes of Hazzard, has sadly passed away at the age of 79.
His ex-wife, Candace Kaniecki, confirmed the news, sharing that Rick died unexpectedly in Los Angeles on Thursday. As of now, the exact cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.
Hurst was slated to appear at Cooter’s Place in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee on July 3rd, a favorite gathering spot for Dukes of Hazzard fans. However, the venue announced via Facebook that Rick would no longer be attending due to “unforeseen circumstances” and promised to reschedule the fan event.
TV lovers from the ‘70s and ‘80s will fondly recall Rick’s charming and often comedic portrayal of Boss Hogg’s cousin, Cletus, a character he portrayed throughout the original run of the show. But Rick’s talent extended far beyond Hazzard County.
Throughout his impressive career, Hurst appeared in several beloved series including Sanford and Son, The Partridge Family, Gunsmoke, MASH*, and The Bob Newhart Show. He also made memorable appearances in films like Disney’s The Cat from Outer Space and Mel Brooks’ History of the World: Part I.
Rick Hurst leaves behind a rich legacy in television and film. He is also remembered as the father of actor Ryan Hurst, known for major roles in Sons of Anarchy and Remember the Titans.
Fans and colleagues alike are paying tribute to Rick’s decades-long contribution to entertainment history. He was 79 years old.
