Atlanta’s hip-hop community is in mourning following the passing of rapper and DJ Anthony Leonard Platt, better known as DJ Unk, at the age of 43.
Unk’s wife, Sherkita Long-Platt, confirmed the heartbreaking news on Facebook, writing, “Please respect me and my family. I just lost my husband, and my kids just lost their father. Our life will never be the same. I LOVE YOU ANTHONY FOREVER.”
DJ Unk emerged on the scene in the late 1990s, carving out a name for himself in Georgia’s music and party circuit. Alongside DJ Montay and DJ Jelly, Unk co-founded Southern Style DJs, hosting events that became staples of Atlanta nightlife.
By 2000, his talent caught the attention of Big Oomp Records, where he signed a deal that launched his career to new heights.
Unk made waves in 2006 with his platinum-certified anthem “Walk It Out,” a track that dominated the airwaves and secured a spot in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. Another hit, “2 Step,” followed closely behind, earning gold certification and cementing his legacy as a dance-floor legend.
Unk faced health challenges starting in 2009, which impacted his ability to maintain his music career at full capacity. Despite these struggles, he continued to release new music sporadically, and his track “Walk It Out” was even featured in the popular video game NBA 2K9, exposing a new generation to his iconic sound.
DJ Unk’s contributions to hip-hop and his influence on Atlanta’s music scene will not be forgotten. Fans and peers alike have taken to social media to share their memories and pay tribute to the man who brought joy to so many with his music.
DJ Unk’s passing is a reminder of the fleeting nature of life but also a celebration of the enduring power of music. His hits will continue to be played at parties and events, ensuring his legacy lives on.
Rest in peace, DJ Unk.
