In a surprising turn of events, André 3000 captured the internet’s attention with the release of his experimental jazz album, “New Blue Sun,” which notably features no rapping.
Despite not achieving massive commercial success, the project outperformed several well-known rappers in its debut week. According to Billboard, “New Blue Sun” achieved a total of 23,783 album-equivalent units in its opening week, securing the 34th position on the chart. This surpassed Lil Durk’s “Nightmare in the Trenches,” which only managed to move 10,853 units and land at No. 114.
2023 has seen a decline in rap album sales, with only four albums claiming the No. 1 spot: Travis Scott’s “UTOPIA,” Lil Uzi Vert’s “The Pink Tape,” Rod Wave’s “Nostalgia,” and Drake’s “For All The Dogs.”
Notably, Kodak Black’s “When I Was Dead” sold 14,067 units, placing it at No. 74, while Larry June’s “The Night Shift” debuted at No. 112 with just under 11,000 units.

Trippie Redd’s “Saint Michael” faced even tougher times, moving 8,892 units to secure the 161st position. Aesop Rock’s “Integrated Tech Solutions” landed at No. 169, with 8,801 units sold in its inaugural week.
Clearly, the curiosity surrounding André 3000’s instrumental work has garnered more attention from Hip-Hop fans than many mainstream rap releases in 2023.
