In a recent interview with High Snobiety, André 3000 shared insights into the reception of his groundbreaking album, “New Blue Sun,” which features an unconventional all-flutes, no-lyrics approach.
Despite the departure from traditional hip-hop, André’s OutKast partner, Big Boi, expressed nothing but pride upon hearing the album.
“André 3000’s surprise with his innovative all-flute album, ‘New Blue Sun,’ stirred the music scene. However, his OutKast collaborator, Big Boi, reacted with genuine pride.”
Reflecting on Big Boi’s response, André disclosed, “He was smiling… He said, ‘Man… I played it for a lot of buddies, even my son. They were like, ‘It’s the real thing. It’s not a mimic.’ You really did this.'” This positive feedback affirmed André’s bold artistic choice.
Moreover, André shared an anecdote about playing the album for fellow artists, including Tyler, The Creator, and Frank Ocean. “I was in Tyler’s living room listening to it, and then Frank just shows up. And so we’re all sitting there listening to it. I’m wondering what the young people’s opinions would be. And I’m so happy that what I’m hearing is really good feedback.”
The album’s unique sound garnered praise from both seasoned musicians and younger audiences alike, signaling a successful departure from the norm in contemporary music.
