A terrifying shark attack left a 63-year-old U.S. tourist fighting for his life after he was bitten while spearfishing in the Bahamas, authorities confirmed. The Royal Bahamas Police Force reported that the incident happened just after 1 p.m. Sunday near Big Grand Cay in Abaco.
The victim sustained devastating injuries before being rushed to a nearby clinic for emergency care. He was later airlifted to the United States for advanced medical treatment.
While the Bahamas is famous for its crystal-clear waters and diving adventures, it also has one of the highest rates of shark attacks in the world. Still, experts say such encounters remain rare.
According to the International Shark Attack File, there have been only 34 confirmed attacks in the Bahamas over the past 400 years… placing the island nation ninth globally for shark incidents.
This latest attack follows a February incident where two American tourists were reportedly injured in an apparent shark encounter at Bimini Bay, a resort area just 50 miles from Miami.
Officials continue to urge visitors to exercise caution when swimming, snorkeling, or spearfishing in Bahamian waters, especially in areas known to attract sharks.
