Tragedy struck in Lisbon when the historic Gloria funicular derailed, killing 16 people, including Heather Hall, a U.S. college professor and mother of two.
Hall, who taught at the College of Charleston, was in Portugal for a conference. Her family called her “a beloved daughter, sister, mother, and educator who lived life boldly and with an open heart.”
The derailment happened Wednesday evening during rush hour, injuring at least 22 others. Victims included nationals from Portugal, Canada, South Korea, France, Switzerland, Ukraine, and the UK.
Portuguese authorities are calling it a tragic accident, though the cause is still under investigation.
