Two tourists died in separate accidents this week near Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, Alaska.
Authorities say Thomas Casey, 69, of Arizona, went missing Saturday while hiking near Thunder Mountain and Nugget Creek trails. Search crews later found his body on the glacier’s west side, confirming he died from a fall.
The next day, an Italian tourist slipped into a rushing glacier stream and was swept through a narrow two-foot ice opening. Rescue teams deemed conditions too dangerous to recover him. Efforts to notify his family are ongoing.
The 13-mile Mendenhall Glacier is one of Alaska’s top tourist spots, but these back-to-back tragedies highlight the risks hidden behind its beauty.
