Two of the hip-hop industry’s most iconic artists, 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne have shared the fascinating story of how their enduring friendship blossomed. Their journey from acquaintances to collaborators began over a decade ago and was recently revisited during their appearance on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on October 20.
Before delivering a stellar performance of their chart-topping track, “Presha,” Lil Wayne, known as Weezy, and 2 Chainz, also known as Tity Boi, took a moment to reflect on their enduring camaraderie. It was in an Atlanta studio where their paths first crossed, and Weezy recollected his initial impressions of 2 Chainz.
Weezy described 2 Chainz as a laid-back individual who had completed his college education and had a passion for basketball. Their similar attitudes immediately connected them, despite Weezy’s unawareness of 2 Chainz’s burgeoning rap career at that time.
When pressed to delve deeper into their collaborative beginnings, the two artists exchanged playful glances, hinting at a little-known facet of their relationship. 2 Chainz, with a hint of humor, revealed, “Uh… Wayne needed some cannabis.” He pointed out that, at one point in time, he served as Tunechi’s marijuana supplier during his visits to Atlanta.
Weezy chimed in, confirming that whenever he ventured to Atlanta to discuss the subject of marijuana, he would always reach out to 2 Chainz for assistance. However, the turning point came around 2007, when 2 Chainz informed Weezy about his music aspirations and introduced him to a track titled “Duffle Bag Boy.”
As Weezy listened to 2 Chainz’s music for the first time, it marked a pivotal moment in their friendship. He recalled, “The moment he said he rapped and the moment I heard it, we got to the studio, and I did this hook for the song, ‘Duffle Bag Boy.’ And the rest is history.” This collaboration evolved into a Top 40 hit for 2 Chainz’s then-group, Playaz Circle.
