What would we do without the beautiful color green? Meet the Halictid Bee, also known as the “Green Sweat Bee.” Green sweat bees vary in their appearance, with different variations of colors.
One of the most noticeable traits of sweat bees is their attraction to perspiration, which offers them precious moisture and salts—nearly all sweat bees nest in the ground; a few nest in rotten wood.
They are solitary insects without a hive of sisters to help defend, so they are not aggressive. Unfortunately, like many other native pollinators, many of these bee species are declining.
Sweat bees primarily feed on pollen and nectar of flowers. However, sweat bees also supplement their diet with salt and moisture, so they are attracted to human sweat.
Green sweat bees play an important role in pollinating the native plants of the areas they inhabit. Males are not equipped to carry pollen on the back of their legs, but females are equipped too. Some of the things they pollinate are alfalfa, sunflower, and stone fruit.
